Squad Criteria – The Background

Evesham Swimming Club are proud of the way that we have developed squad criteria to suit the aspirations of a variety of swimmers. When considering squad placement for swimmers, we consider their age and performance across a range of categories – speed, technique, attendance, fitness, effort and attitude. By considering the whole swimmer, and their overall well-being, we know that the best performance will come.

As well as initial placement, when a new swimmer joins the club, criteria are designed to make the move up process clear to everyone and to make swimmers, parents and coaches strive for improvement.

Joining the Club:

We welcome children from the age of 5 or 6 to join Evesham Swimming Club. A minimum expectation would be that children are performing at least to the standard of stage 7 in the ‘Learn to Swim’ program to be considered. Obviously, the older the child wishing to join, the greater the expectations will be. For example, a child aged 8 or 9 would need to have passed their Gold award before coming for a try-out. A full assessment (try-out) of each individual is essential for us to assess the suitability of club swimming for all children wishing to join.

For Para-Swimmers looking to join the club, a club based assessment would be necessary initially. These are likely to be conducted with our introductory squad. Swimmers must have a desire to compete or take their swimming beyond the Learn to Swim program (provided by Evesham Leisure Centre).

“Move ups”

Promotion between squads will be based on a combination of speed, technique, behaviour, attendance and stamina. Regularly competing at events will help progression through the club. Age is also a key consideration for coaches in order to match the best training times and intensity to each individual swimmer.
